2013 Wrap Up

2013 was a great year. As the minutes are ticking down to the end of the year fireworks I'd like to look back at what I accomplished this year. At the start of the year I (as I often do) I posted a big long New Years Resolution. I will not be doing this next year but I will talk about that in my next post. You can read last year's resolution post here: http://daniduckart.blogspot.ca/2013/01/new-years-resolution-time.html

The following is what I wanted to accomplish in 2013.

1. Post On My Blog On a Daily Basis. This so did not happen. Neither did posting a pic weekly. I will not be attempting a daily blog this year. It's just too much time that I don't have!

2. Send Out Work To Be Published I sent out a spot illustration at the end of 2012 to the SCBWI Bulletin. I did not get it published yet, but I did get a nice letter that it was being kept on file. This year one of my stories and two of my illustrations ended up in anthologies for the Chapter Book Challenge. The anthologies were

SuperHERo Tales: A Collection of Female Superhero Stories (story) and

Jingle Bells: Tales of Holiday Spirit from Around the World (illustrations)

3. Finish My In-Progress Picture Book So did not happen this year!

4. Come Up With (AT LEAST) 8 Picture Book Ideas Thanks to PiBoIdMo I have over 30 ideas for Picture Books for next year. I wrote at least 5 picture books this year, but all of them need to be edited before sending for publication.

The only other thing that I achieved of note is that I lost 30+ pounds this year and kept it off!

An Interview With Anna Staniszewski on "The Dirt Diary"

It's a day later then when I wanted to post it, but here is my interview with Anna Staniszewski about her new book "The Dirt Diaries". You can read the first chapter of this exciting book on her website here: www.annastan.com. There are also a lot of other fun things on her website like her blog, a list of events where she'll be and many other resources just waiting for you to explore.

Born in Poland and raised in the United States, Anna Staniszewski grew up loving stories in both Polish and English. She was named the 2006-2007 Writer-in-Residence at the Boston Public Library and a winner of the 2009 PEN New England Susan P. Bloom Discovery Award. When she’s not writing, Anna spends her time teaching, reading, and challenging unicorns to games of hopscotch. She is the author of My Very UnFairy Tale Life series, published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky. Look for the first book in Anna’s next tween series, The Dirt Diary, in January 2014, and visit her at www.annastan.com.

You can see a trailer for "The Dirt Diary" here:  http://youtu.be/XFbn0j3Fc80

Anna Staniszewski on "The Dirt Diary"
Coming January 7, 2014!

What's it like shifting from a magical world to a character in "the real world"?
Since I've traditionally been a SFF writer, I was a little hesitant about writing something realistic, but Rachel's strong voice and quirky character made it a lot of fun from the beginning. Pretty soon I got so caught up in Rachel's misadventures that I didn't even miss the magic. Someone pointed out to me, though, that The Dirt Diary has a "Cinderella" feel to it, and I had to agree. I guess I can't get away from fairy tales no matter how hard I try!

Saw your book trailer! Really cute and funny. How is it different researching for something in a fantasy book then a fiction story?
Researching realistic fiction is a slightly different process. With my UnFairy Tale series, I read a lot of fairy tales for inspiration, but with The Dirt Diary, I watched baking videos (because Rachel loves to bake) and asked friends who'd cleaned houses to share their experiences. My research focused much more on nit-gritty details than inspirational ones.

Sometimes writers put a bit of themselves into their main characters. Is the character Rachel like you at all?
Rachel and I definitely have a lot in common personality-wise. Her extreme shyness, neurotic insecurities, and funny sayings were inspired by my own quirks from when I was in middle school. Thankfully, I’ve gotten a little more outgoing and a little less insecure since then!

What was the best part of writing "The Dirt Diary"?
Rachel says a lot of wacky things throughout the book, things like "Oh my goldfish!" and "Holy twice-baked potato!" She also uses goofy fake swear words like "gas cap!" I think the fake swears were the most fun to come up with. :-)

What are you working on next?
I just finished up the last round of revisions on the sequel, The Prank List, which comes out in July, and I'm about to start writing the third book in the series, The Gossip File, which will be out in January 2015.

I hope that you will all visit Anna's website and buy her new book when it comes out in a few days! If you need something to read until then then you should pick up Anna's "My Very Unfairytale Life" Series!  You have a whole week to read all four books, no problem, right? Enjoy!

Pattern Pals Colouring Page: Grunt

Usually I like to check the print on these pages before I put them up. Today I'm out of yellow ink and my printer refuses to print my black and white picture because of this. If anyone has problems with this let me know right away and I'll fix it!

What's Up Wednesday... Thursday Edition

I'm still taking a break from blogging and working hard core on my Illustration work. It's hard to take a break because I want to work on this, but I know I need the mental and physical break from this right now. It's also difficult because I know it can be hard getting started on things all over again. FYI: I'll be posting another colouring page for you tomorrow!

What I'm Reading
Netflix descriptions and instructions on how to put kids toys together.

What I'm Writing/Drawing

I've come up with several ideas for stories for my webcomic already. I've also come up with some character designs, scenery and other important parts of the books. I still have a lot of stories I need to come up with. Soon I need to actually sketch out and illustrate my artwork. I will also need to get my webpage going that will be hosting all of this great content!

What's Up Wednesday!

I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted! December 4th? Is that right? I don't believe it! I demand a recount! I've been really sick, and it's been hard to do much of anything. Hopefully I'll be able to do all the things before Christmas!

What I'm Reading
Not enough. Though, it truly never is enough.

What I'm Writing/Drawing

I finished up my last craft show and really didn't make much with it. It was expected and is unfortunate, but the goal was always more to get published. I'll just be trying some different things in the future.

I entered the Tomie de Paola Award contest http://www.scbwi.org/awards/tomie-depaola-award/ I entered an illustration that I really ended up loving. I'd love to show it to you here, but that will have to wait until after the award is announced. I did have the opportunity to enter another contest, but I just needed a break until Christmas!

I will still be taking it easy until after Christmas. I'm hoping to post another "What's Up Wednesday" post on Christmas or a Christmas post and an update post on Thursday. I will also post a couple of coloring pages between now and the end of the year. I hate to be so absent right now, but I want to get things going on my web comic! Other than these things I will be posting (most likely on Monday) an interview with Anna Staniszewski about her new book "The Dirt Diary". On the 31st I will be posting a summary of the year and on the first I'll let you know what I've got planned for the following year!

No Sugar Tonight!

Sorry, tonight will be another night of no sweet, sweet blog reviews. It's December and this is a busy month for me!  I'm just going to say now that I'm going to use most of this month to plan out what I'm going to do for my blog next year. I won't rule out blog reviews, but if I don't get to them it's because I'm planning other goodies. What are these other goodies you say? Well, they may or may not include a couple of free coloring pages! So stay tuned!

What's Up Wednesday!

I feel like I'm sludging through these craft shows. Before I say more I will make a point of saying that the people I meet at these are great. I'm just having the worst luck ever selling anything. Last weekend I'm hoping it was slow because of the Grey Cup. I'm just hoping to make back my table at the next couple of events (which I haven't been doing. I really hope it's more my bad choice in shows than anything else. I think the next two shows will be better. One is a dreaded (but extremely busy) swap meet and one is a huge craft show. Both are at Cloverdale fairgrounds.

What I'm Reading
Blog posts!

What I'm Writing/Drawing

Still working on art cards. I didn't display them last time because I forgot to scan them first. Having a record of these is more important than making money!

I am also doing some larger stuffed Pattern Pals (which I may not sell online depending on shipping costs). I am also doing small (about 2.5" by 2.5") felt brooches/pins. These I may decide to sell online, but right now I'm focusing on selling them at my shows. I will post pictures for both later. If you are interested in either of these please let me know!

New Swap Meet this weekend:

November 30th
Cloverdale Kids Swap Meet6050 176 Street
Surrey, BC
9:00am - 12:30pm
If you have kids and live in the are you MUST go to this show! This is a great place to get kids clothing and toys for Christmas. I know that I'm going to *try* to do some shopping here. Not sure how much I'll actually get done, but I'm going to try. It will be rough being a vendor at the same time! I may try to get my husband to come with me so I can have a stand in for a bit!

Every Day Possible
- Getting ready for my show Saturday!

- Remember that I have Twitter/Facebook and a life outside of these.

Wed 11/27

- Write my What's Up Wednesday post ON WEDNESDAY BOOYAH!

What Inspires Me Right Now

My toddler who is learning so much right now!

What Else I've Been Up To

Baby Minding

David is sleeping a lot better now. He's still waking at night, but it's easier to get him to sleep. He's learning so much right now! Not even three and he can count to 17 most of the time. He knows all his letters large and small (but not necessarily in order). He also knows an assortment of shapes. He can do 48 piece puzzles all by himself (and larger with help). He's still having problems with colours, but he'll get there.

Gonna go watch Dr. Who now!

Kate Scott Writes

Sorry this is a late post tonight! Lots of things going on so it was hard to post earlier today. Today I'm doing a review of Kate Scott's blog. In Febuary of 2014 Kate Scott's YA novel Counting to D will be in bookstores. You can see her blog here: http://www.katescottwrites.com/

Both Kate Scott and myself participate in "What's Up Wednesday". Her posts are different from mine because they are more deeply personal. As a result of this her posts tend to be far more informative than mine, even when they are shorter. Because Kate's posts are so personal it makes me feel like I know her. I'm impressed in the way that her personality shines through in these posts.

I love, love, love Kate's weekly interview posts. Even more so I love the concept behind them. She believes that everyone, though they might seem ordinary, are wonderful. This is just fantastic. In her own words:

"I love to read, and write, because I love stories. Everyone has a story to tell. That's what makes this crazy world we live in so interesting. Every Monday, I interview a different person here and share their stories. At first glance, my guests may appear ordinary, but I promise they're not. They're people. And all people are fascinating. We all have a story to tell."

This is the one of the reasons I watch the TV show Dr. Who. Yes it's crazy science fiction, but in several episodes he says that "ordinary" people are the most fantastic people. Quote from the Doctor himself (he was speaking to a man, but he means the same about women as well):

"An ordinary man: that's the most important thing in creation. The whole world's different because he's alive!

It may seem like a silly comparison, but I think that someone can see the extraordinary in the ordinary is a person worth getting to know. I haven't read any of Kate's books (yet), but just based on this bit of knowledge alone I advise strongly to check out her new book.

Besides her wonderful view on people, Kate's interviews are great. She has a way of asking questions to get the most out of her interviews. She knows how to get the most out of each and every interview. I've seen many interviews that are stale, but every single one of her interviews shows the beauty in each person she interviews.

I think you are missing out if you don't check out Kate's blog. Her views alone on the world are a great reason to check this blog out.

Tara Lazar - Writing Books for Kids (While Raising Them) & PiBoIdMo

I think it's only fair since I reviewed Meg Miller's blog and ReviMo (which is coming up in January.) I should also do Tara Lazar's blog and PiBoIdMo as well! Unfortunately I'm doing this a bit late because the registration for PiBoIdMo is over this year, however you can still go to Tara's blog, take the challenge without the prizes and learn a lot from this event.

Before I start talking about PiBoIdMo I want to first tell you about Tara's blog when she's not talking Picture Book Idea Month. One thing I like about Tara's blog is the way she has of inspiring writers. Every writer gets to the point where they hit a wall. Tara's blog has lots of little cures for this. She tells her readers about the hurdles she has face (and is still facing) and what she did to accomplish her goals. Even if her advice doesn't help solve your problem, it still is nice to know you aren't alone in the Picture Book world.

Besides being inspiring Tara also has wonderful interviews (with more inspiring people!) The people that Tara interviews are great influential (or soon to be influential people in the picture book world. There are also lots of great contests to enter on Tara's blog. One could say that winning all these contest would make it so you never have to buy another book again, but honestly who are we kidding. This just saves us money so we can spend it on more books!

My favorite thing about Tara's blog is probably the concept behind it. Writing for Kids (While Raising Them). This is the boat that I'm in now. If you don't have kids I have to tell you that it's incredibly hard to create picture books when you have young ones of your own (especially as a stay at home parent). I love that Tara's blog is there proving that parents can create great picture books. Honestly, I think in some weird way not having time (or sanity) gives us parents a little more focus when we do make time to write.

Now more about PiBoIdMo or Picture Book Idea Month! This is a wonderful idea for me. Last year I joined the 12 x 12. I joined with the idea that I was going to submit a bunch of picture book manuscripts to agents so I got gold level membership which I do not regret. What I do regret is the fact that I stopped coming up with new stories to write. I have been so busy and my idea pool has run dry. I just couldn't think of any way to reasonably generate new ideas. I've still been incredibly busy but I've found the time to generate a lot of ideas for picture books.

Tara is a great supporter of her fellow picture book creators. Even long after PiBoIdMo Tara shares the success stories of all the people who succeed as a direct result of participating in PiBoIdMo! The big example of this is the fact that she works so hard on PiBoIdMo. What she does with this has inspired so many people to be successful and I hope that she continues PiBoIdMo for many years to come!

RJ Hamm's Art

Hi everyone! I'm sorry everyone. I haven't been able to keep up with my blog as I would like. I will post a "What's Up Wednesday" post tonight sometime. Yes it's a day late, but such is life.

A couple days ago in the mail I got a package. Inside was a picture by RJ Hamm. Now I wasn't shocked that I received this picture in the mail. In fact I had won it in a contest! Robert asked in the forums what he had in his breast pocket. There were all kinds of answers from lint to pens and I believe even an egg. I said the only logical thing that came to mind, "Nothing, you have nothing in your pocket." I believed it too. I don't know if it was my belief or the actual fact that there was nothing in his pocket that won me the print, but I won!

RJ Hamm sells photo prints on his Etsy shop. Below is the lovely print that I received from the contest. I just need to get it framed now! I'm so excited. You can see more of RJ Hamm's work or order prints at his Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/RJsnapshot

Meg Miller's Painting of Me!

Meg Miller ran a contest a little while ago to advertise ReviMo or Revise More Picture Books Week!  http://megmillerwrites.blogspot.ca/p/revimo_16.html Well I was one of the winners of this contest. I could have won a Starbucks card or have myself cartooned by the talented Meg Miller. Guess which one I chose? Here is the wonderful painting she did of me! She did a wonderful job. Thank you so much again, Meg!

Some New Work

I've been working on a lot of things lately, and I haven't had time to show it all. This first bunch are just things that I've put up in my shop lately, but they are fun so I'll share them with me. I'm planing on doing a bunch of arceos (2.5x3.5 artwork) so I'll be posting them here in the between times as I get them done. I have about 7 inked and ready for colours already. Look for those in the near future!

I'm showing you two of the duck cards because both of these have sold! I did the best to show these cards, but most of these are metallic so I don't think it's possible to show them in all their shiny glory. Maybe if I did .gifs you could see them better?

All of these are in my Etsy shop, so click on the link to the right if you want to see more!

What's Up Wednesday!

I didn't get a chance to do a Blog Review yesterday. Had some family issues recently that made it extremely difficult. The big thing was Peter's (my husband) Grandmother was in the hospital. It was thought that she might pass Monday. It seems as though she's mostly out of the woods now, but there are things that are wrong with her that can't be repaired. She may not be with us much longer, but I do hope she can spend Christmas with us this year.

Though it is a lesser problem... or at least a non-life threatening problem: My son has been insane for about 2-2.5 weeks now. He's not been sleeping or eating well. He's been irritable and irrational. I assure you that most of this is quite normal for him. The big difference is that he's been screaming bloody murder about well bloody everything. He doesn't just want some candy - He screams, "I NEED CHOCOLATE CANDY!" Actually when he needs anything he screams. He also threw short screaming fit when I politely told him "No, that's not our Skytrain stop". Long story short we went to the Dr. today and he's got an ear infection (after which he informs me that his ears hurt.. ya could have told me before kid!). He's on antibiotics for the next little while. He's had this before several times & will feel better in a few days.

What I'm Reading

The back of my eyelids. Good stories there.

What I'm Writing/Drawing

I'm going to do my first Craft Show this weekend! Here's the info if you are in the area:

Elim Village 5th Annual Christmas Craft Fair & Market
Free admission.
9008 158th Street

Surrey
Free Admission
Fri. Nov. 8: 6:00-9:00pm

Sat Nov 9: 10:00am-3:00pm

Peter's dad (Minuteman Press North Vancouver) printed out a bunch of black and white posters for me on card stock. While I will have my coloring books and my free coloring pages, these are big posters (12.5"x18") than can be colored and put up on the wall! I've also added some sparkling Christmas cards to my Greeting Card selection. You can see a sample here. These are slightly more expensive than the other cards because of the costs of the materials.

I bought a couple things for my table recently so I can have a nicer, more organized display. I also found another table easel for displays. It will be a bit of a hodge podge of display items, but it will keep me a little more organized!
